Your licence and sites

Manage your licence

From your account you can authorise a new site to use your licence, or deactivate a site remotely — useful when a site is gone or you’ve lost access to its dashboard.

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Under Purchase History, find your order and click View Licenses.
  3. Click Manage Sites.
  4. Deactivate an existing site, or add a new site URL and authorise it.

Renewals, extensions and upgrades

Licences renew automatically each year through a subscription. You can cancel the subscription at any time in your account; your licence stays active until its expiry date.

Renewing

Renewing gives you another year of updates and premium support. If your licence has expired, log in to your account and click Renew license next to it.

Your licence key doesn’t change when you renew. Just check the key is still activated on your site — see Updating GP Premium.

Extending

Extend adds a year to a licence that hasn’t expired yet, for example to lock in a sale price. It sets up a new subscription for future renewals.

Note. Extend only appears on licences with no active subscription. To extend during a sale, cancel your subscription first — this doesn’t cancel your licence — then refresh your account page and click Extend.

Upgrading

If you have a yearly GP Premium licence, you can upgrade to GeneratePress One (GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro and GenerateCloud) from your account. Any time left on your GP Premium licence is credited against the upgrade price.

Renew, Extend or Upgrade?

  1. Renew is for a licence that has expired.
  2. Extend adds a year to one that hasn’t.
  3. Upgrade moves you to GeneratePress One.

Why is Extend hidden while a subscription is active?

Our payment processor, Stripe, can’t move an existing subscription’s billing date forward a year, and a licence can only have one active subscription. Extending creates a new subscription, so it’s only offered when there isn’t one already.

Why was I charged with months still left on my licence?

Your licence and your subscription are two separate clocks. The licence has an expiry date; the subscription bills once a year from the day it was created. Each payment adds a year on top of whatever time the licence already has, so you’re never charged early and never lose time.

Example

On 1 January 2026 you extend a licence that ran until 1 July 2026. It now runs until 1 July 2027, and the new subscription renews on 1 January 2027. On that date you’re charged, and the licence moves from 1 July 2027 to 1 July 2028.

If you’d rather the dates lined up, cancel the subscription and renew by hand near expiry. We don’t recommend it: you lose the buffer, and prices can change between renewals.

Billing and support

Generating your invoice

  1. Log in to your account
  2. In Purchase History, click Generate Invoice next to the order.
  3. Fill in your details and generate the invoice.

Resolving topics

When your problem is fixed, mark your support forum topic as resolved. It tells the team the topic needs no more replies and helps others with the same problem find a working answer. Resolved topics also clear their Private information automatically.

  1. Open your topic.
  2. Set its status to Resolved.

Need more help later? Reply in the same topic if it’s the same problem, or open a new topic for a new one. For urgent account or billing questions, use the contact page. New to the forum? See Using the support forum.

Troubleshooting

Fixes for update and activation errors. Most sites never need these.

Authorizing site URLs

GP Premium can only update from your dashboard if the site’s URL is on your licence’s authorised list. Activating your key adds the URL automatically. If the URL changes later — for example, moving from staging to live — updates fail with:

Update failed: Download failed. Unauthorized

To fix it, either re-activate your licence key on the site, or add the new URL yourself:

  1. Open Manage Sites as in Manage your licence.
  2. Remove the old URL and add the new one.

WordPress caches update checks, so the update may take a little while to become available.

Licence key activation issues

Licence key not saving

If the key won’t save and no error appears, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing anything. Then try activating the key again.

403 Forbidden when activating

A 403 Forbidden error means your server and ours can’t talk to each other, usually because of a firewall. Work through the steps below in order:

  1. Use Secondary API
  2. Check that cURL is enabled
  3. Check Firewalls

1. Use the secondary API

We run a secondary API for exactly this problem. Add this PHP, then try activating again:

add_filter( 'pre_http_request', function( $pre, $args, $url ) {
    if ( 'https://generatepress.com' === $url || 'https://generatepress.com/' === $url ) {
        return wp_remote_post(
            'https://api.generatepress.com',
                array(
                    'timeout' => $args['timeout'],
                    'sslverify' => $args['sslverify'],
                    'body' => $args['body'],
                )
        );
    }

    return $pre;
}, 10, 3 );

2. Check that cURL is enabled

Activation needs the PHP curl extension. Go to Tools → Site Health; if cURL is missing or disabled it’s listed there. Ask your host to install or enable it.

3. Firewalls

If cURL is fine, a firewall is the likely cause.

  • Cloudflare: switch your domain to DNS-only and try again. If that works, Cloudflare’s firewall is blocking our server.
  • Host firewall: ask your host whether the server has a firewall, and to disable it briefly while you activate.
  • Security plugin: temporarily deactivate any firewall plugin and try again.

If one of these fixes it, add our IP address to that firewall’s allow list and switch it back on: 162.159.135.42

Still failing? Send us a debug log

If you’ve confirmed nothing on your side is blocking the request:

  1. Turn on WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG. See Debugging in WordPress.
  2. Add this PHP:
    add_action( 'http_api_debug', function( $response, $context, $class, $r, $url ) {
    	if ( 'https://generatepress.com' !== $url && 'https://api.generatepress.com' !== $url ) {
    		return;
    	}

    	error_reporting( error_reporting() & ~E_NOTICE );
    	error_log( '------ Start GeneratePress license key debugging ------' );
    	error_log( '--- HTTP response or WP_Error object. ---' );
    	error_log( print_r( $response, true ) );
    	error_log( '--- HTTP transport used. ---' );
    	error_log( $class );
    	error_log( '--- HTTP request arguments. ---' );
    	error_log( print_r( $r, true ) );
    }, 10, 5 );
  3. Try activating the key again.
  4. Open wp-content/debug.log and share the output in a new topic on the support forum. Put anything sensitive in the Private information field.

    Remove both snippets and turn debugging off once you’re done.
